SCARCELY had the ruling SWAPO Party expelled Petrus Jafet, the mayor of Oniipa town in the Oshikoto Region, for registering to contest the November regional council elections as an independent candidate, when another SWAPO leader in the Zambezi Region, Morven Mukwata, allegedly committed the same offence and had to be excommunicated as well.
Mukwata was the party’s Zambezi regional treasurer.
Jafet was expelled earlier this month after registering to contest in the Oniipa Constituency.
SWAPO’s Secretary General, Sophia Shaningwa, said that in both cases, the members excommunicated themselves by the mere fact of having registered as independent candidates, which is strictly prohibited by the party’s constitution.
