Boosaaso (PP News Desk) — Ten prominent traditional leaders of Puntland yesterday issued a statement calling for a summit to discuss the reform of clan representation in Puntland’s political institutions.
The five-point statement emphasises the political and territorial unity of the Federal Republic of Somalia, the need to convene a conference similar to the foundational 1998 conference to discuss changes affecting Puntland following the formation of a new federal member state, the counterterrorism operation against Daesh in Calmiskaad, the illegal fishing by foreign trawlers off the coast of Puntland State of Somalia, and the rising water and electricity rates in Boosaaso, the commercial city of Puntland.

Recently, the President of Puntland State of Somalia, Said Abdullahi Deni, condemned the practice of issuing fishing licences to unsupervised foreign trawlers and noted that the fees from those companies do not reach the Puntland State coffers.
“The establishment of the North East State renders the 1998 Puntland Charter defunct,” said a journalist in Boosaaso. A new conference will focus on redistributing parliamentary seats currently occupied by MPs whose sub-clans have already secured political representation in the new Parliament of the Laascaanood-based North East State of Somalia.
