COMMISSIONER General of the Namibian Correctional Service (NCS), Raphael Hamunyela, has said claims that correctional officers smuggle out high-profile prisoners are false and could not be further from the truth.
Hamunyela made these remarks in response to NUDO MP Vataruhe Kandorozu, who said that Fishrot and Oilrot accused persons who are in prison are being transported at night to conduct their business activities and are then brought back to prison. Kandorozu said that this information comes from sources inside the prison.
“In the facility, there is no officer who can take someone out to go somewhere unless it is done legally. The facility is locked up, and the keys are taken into a safe, and the key for the safe is taken to a different location. It is not possible — unless, during the day, when prisoners are taken to court or hospital, and they make a stop somewhere — that possibility is there. But to say at night, when the facility is locked up, it cannot even come near the truth,” Hamunyela said.
