ODM Pledges Loyalty to Ruto Government as Oburu Oginga Takes Over
The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has reaffirmed that it will remain part of the broad-based government formed under a cooperation deal between the late Raila Odinga and President William Ruto on March 7, 2025.
Speaking to the media following ODM Central Committee meeting on Monday, October 27, 2025, Secretary General Edwin Sifuna said that the party had resolved to extend its partnership with the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) through to 2027, observing that the coalition is based on national unity and stability.
“As top leadership of this party, we reiterated the commitment of the party to the broad-based government until 2027, a relationship guided by the 10-point agenda entered for the sake of peace and stability of the country,” Sifuna stated.
He further noted that ODM remains dedicated to preserving the legacy of its late leader, Raila Odinga, who devoted his life to promoting democracy, justice, and good governance in Kenya.
“We shall pursue all causes that Raila dedicated to and do everything within our power to uphold the unity of the party and apply lessons learnt from our departed leader and comrade in the service of the people of Kenya, whom he loved and fought for,” Sifuna added.
During the same meeting, the Central Committee officially endorsed Senator Oburu Oginga as the new ODM party leader, describing the move as a unifying step designed to maintain stability and continuity within the party following Raila’s passing.
“The party remains strong and steadfast in all its obligations and will rise stronger from adversity. This being the first meeting of the committee since the passing of the Party Leader, the top party organ resolved as follows: That we endorse Hon. Dr. Oburu Oginga as the new party leader,” the committee said in its statement.
Sifuna urged ODM members, officials, and supporters nationwide to rally behind Oburu Oginga and support his leadership as the party navigates this new chapter.
The statement concluded by emphasizing that Oburu’s leadership will be instrumental in ensuring ODM remains united and focused on achieving the vision Raila Odinga set for the movement more than two decades ago.
“And urge the party rank and file to accord him all the necessary support and cooperation to enable him to guide the party through this difficult time,” it added.
