ODM Not in Any Coalition with Ruto Government, Says Mombasa Governor Nassir
Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Nassir has dismissed claims that the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has entered into a coalition with the ruling Kenya Kwanza government.
In an interview on NTV on Monday, October 27, 2025, Nassir clarified that the relationship between ODM and the national government doesn’t involve a coalition or even a signed document. According to the governor, the party hasn’t signed any agreement with President William Ruto’s administration, contrary to reports circulating in some quarters.
“We actually do not have a coalition agreement. We never signed a coalition agreement. We never signed anything else,” Nassir said.
He explained that ODM only agreed to cooperate with the Kenya Kwanza administration on specific national issues.
“We have an agreement that there are 10 issues affecting Kenyans. We listed them, sat down, and said, let’s implement these issues,” he added.
Nassir’s clarification comes as rumors have been growing that ODM could be preparing to forge a political alliance with the ruling alliance ahead of the 2027 General Election. He, however, maintained ODM’s partnership with the government is aimed at merely policy implementation and national development, not politics or power sharing.
“There’s no political party in the world that gets formed for the purpose of being in the opposition,” he said.
ODM Secretary General Edwin Sifuna has similarly reaffirmed the party will field its own candidate for president in 2027 elections. Sifuna insisted that the ODM government coalition is issue-based and not a political merger.
In the meantime, ODM will continue collaborating with the Kenya Kwanza government on joint development and policy targets until 2027, amidst continued internal talks over the way forward for the party’s working alliance after the next election.
