THE Namibian Police have recorded several serious road accidents across the country over the weekend, resulting in fatalities, multiple injuries and one arrest.
According to the weekend crime report, a male taxi driver lost control of a white Toyota Etios along Winnie Madikizela-Mandela Street near the Ramatex main gate in Otjomuise around 19:00 on Saturday. The vehicle veered off the road, colliding with trees and a traffic sign. The driver sustained severe head injuries and was admitted to Lady Pohamba Private Hospital in critical condition. Two passengers suffered minor injuries, while another passenger fled the scene.
In Katima Mulilo, a 22-year-old unlicensed driver of a white VW Polo was arrested after allegedly driving under the influence and hitting a police reservist on patrol at around 03:50 on Sunday. The reservist sustained serious head injuries and was rushed to Katima Mulilo State Hospital. The suspect, who tested positive for alcohol (1.32mg/L), faces multiple charges, including reckless driving, driving without a license, and failing to assist the injured.
Two people were injured when a vehicle travelling from Walvis Bay overturned about 10km outside Okahandja along the Karibib road around 03:15 on Sunday. The 42-year-old male driver and his 29-year-old female passenger were taken to Okahandja State Hospital and are in stable condition.
A Botswana-registered truck carrying furniture overturned near Hosea Kutako International Airport at about 02:00 on Saturday. The 32-year-old driver sustained injuries to his left arm and was transported to the hospital by MVA paramedics.
A 34-year-old passenger died instantly after falling from a moving Nissan Hardbody double cab when the rear door allegedly opened on its own. He was subsequently run over by another vehicle travelling in the same direction. The incident occurred around 14:30 on Friday on the Oshiweda–Eembaxu gravel road between Oshuulu and Onakalunga villages in the Ohangwena Region. Both drivers tested negative for alcohol.
A male driver died after losing control of a grey Honda Fit taxi at around 01:50 on Sunday at the corner of Clemence Kapuo Street and Independence Avenue in Katutura. The vehicle overturned and landed on its roof inside a residential yard. The deceased was the sole occupant.
