AFTER a spell of hot weather, Windhoek finally experienced heavy showers today, with rainfall expected to intensify over the next few days.
Today’s rain left several streets across the capital flooded while also revitalising some of the city’s rivers, including rivers in Klein Windhoek and Ludwigsdorf. Olympia and Ludwigsdorf recorded between 30 mm and 45 mm of rainfall within just a few hours. The downpour was widely welcomed, with many residents sharing photos and videos of the rainfall’s impact on social media.
However, due to several flooded streets and rising river levels in and around the city, the Windhoek City Police have urged residents to remain cautious.

“Do not underestimate water levels; never drive or walk through floodwaters or overflowing rivers. Find an alternative route and seek higher ground immediately. Report any flooded roads or overflowing rivers to the City Police for closure,” the Windhoek City Police urged.
Windhoek was not the only area to receive rainfall. Parts of the Otjozondjupa and north-eastern regions also experienced showers. In the Otjozondjupa Region, Otavi recorded more than 10 mm of rain, while Katima Mulilo and surrounding areas saw between 5 mm and 11.2 mm.
More showers are expected in several interior regions, particularly in central areas, tomorrow. The public is advised to remain vigilant, as flash floods are likely, especially in Windhoek.
