MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Somalia’s Prime Minister, Hamza Abdi Barre, has dismissed the Minister of Labour and Social Affairs, Yusuf Mohamed, and appointed veteran politician Salim Aliyow Ibrow to the post. The decision, announced on Monday, marks Ibrow’s 18th ministerial appointment in a career spanning three decades.
The Prime Minister said the decision was driven by the scale of work required within the Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs, noting the need for stronger leadership to enhance its efficiency and output.
The move comes as Mr Barre begins a series of government changes with only a few months remaining before the current administration’s term expires. Last week, he appointed new director generals to the ministries of Public Works and Telecommunications.
In recent weeks, the Prime Minister has made a series of high-profile visits to government agencies aimed at improving performance and accountability. However, political observers say the timing of the reshuffle suggests the changes may also be motivated by political considerations ahead of the next electoral cycle.
Ibrow, one of Somalia’s longest-serving public officials, has previously held a range of key government positions, including acting prime minister and ministerial roles across different administrations.
