THE Swakopmund Municipality is warning the public about scammers impersonating municipal officials in an attempt to extort money from residents.
“It has come to Council’s attention that scammers are impersonating municipal officials in a bid to extort funds from residents. Scams and identity theft are always something to be highly aware of. Council urges residents to be extra vigilant and wary of any suspicious phone calls or text messages requesting payment related to a vehicle breakdown, traffic fines, payment of tickets, water bills, work opportunities, housing and other municipal-related accounts,” Swakopmund Municipality cautioned.
The Municipality emphasised that officials will never request payment to be made directly to them or into private bank accounts. All vacancies will be advertised through local media or the Municipality’s official social media platforms.
“All payments are to be made at the relevant cashiers, at the Municipal Head Office, Matutura Satellite PayPoint and the Rest Camp. All traffic-related payments can be made at the magistrate court or NATIS Offices,” Swakopmund Municipality added.
