President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah says businessman John Savva was known to be generous without being vocal about it.
She said this at his memorial service at Walvis Bay on Friday.
Savva died on 11 October and will be buried at the coastal town. on Saturday.
“One of the things he was known for was being generous without being noisy about it, reminding us that not all good deeds must be publicised.
“He helped those who went to him in good faith. He believed their dignity must also be respected, a profound lesson for all of us to keep,” she said.
The president said through his entrepreneurial journey, Savva became a towering figure in Namibia’s economy, establishing successful businesses
across various sectors, particularly in tourism. She said his leadership also extended to the business fraternity at Walvis Bay, where he served the Namibian Chamber of Commerce and Industry for 25 years, including 20 years as president.
Nandi-Ndaitwah said Savva arrived in Namibia driven by courage, ambition, and a dream forged under the Mediterranean sun of his beloved homeland.
Guided by values of integrity, humility and compassion, she said Savva transformed his initial challenges into stepping stones of success while staying grounded in faith and hard work.
“He grew from an immigrant entrepreneur into one of Namibia’s most admired business visionaries, a man whose success was equalled only by his humanity.
His beliefs extended far beyond material possessions,” she said.
Savva lived by the principle that money can make friends, but it can also make enemies, and rather let your character than your wealth speak for you.
His generosity, she said, was not an act of charity, but an expression of conviction, a reflection of light, or “phos”, as he often called it in Greek.
The president said Savva will be remembered for his dedication to empowering Namibian young people from all walks of life.
