In a world often driven by profit margins and corporate competition, acts of genuine compassion and service to humanity stand out as beacons of hope. This truth was beautifully illustrated when Karpowership, Sierra Leone’s leading independent energy provider, officially handed over a fully renovated and furnished building to the Variety Children and Family Services Orphanage in Kingtom. The $70,000 project will not only improve the lives of children in need but also reflect the company’s philosophy of powering communities through empathy and social impact.
At the heart of this humanitarian effort was Nour Hashim, a distinguished businessman, philanthropist and Karpowership representative, whose leadership and personal commitment turned the vision into reality.
For years, Nour Hashim has embodied the principle that business success and community development are inseparable. His approach to corporate engagement goes beyond boardroom negotiations and profit statements; it reaches into the lives of ordinary people. Through partnerships with organizations like Karpowership, he has consistently championed initiatives that leave lasting social footprints.
Speaking at the orphanage handover ceremony, Nour Hashim described the project as “a promise fulfilled and a dream renewed,” expressing profound gratitude to Karpowership and its partners. “From the very first day this case was presented to me, I knew it was something special; a mission that had to be done with heart and with excellence,” he said.
He praised Karpowership’s commitment, noting that the company did not merely renovate a structure but reignited hope for hundreds of children. “This is what real impact looks like,” Nour Hashim declared, emphasising that investing in children is an investment in the nation’s future.
The orphanage project, undertaken in collaboration with local authorities and community partners, represents Karpowership’s broader Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) strategy. Since beginning operations in Sierra Leone in 2018, the company has supplied reliable and affordable electricity to the national grid, while simultaneously engaging in initiatives that improve social welfare.
According to Karpowership’s Commercial Operations Director, Emre Durmusoglu, the company’s investment covered full structural renovation, furniture, utilities and the long-term commitment to fund monthly consumables for the orphanage. “Our goal is to ensure the children live in dignity and comfort,” he said, underscoring Karpowership’s “One World” vision; a global philosophy rooted in shared progress and compassion.
For Nour Hashim, philanthropy is not a publicity exercise; it is a calling. His collaboration with Karpowership is anchored in the conviction that the private sector must play an active role in social transformation. With the support of his business partner, Joseph Skeff, Nour Hashim has been instrumental in linking corporate action with community needs, ensuring that each intervention is purposeful and sustainable.
Deputy Minister of Energy, Edmond B. Nonie, commended both Karpowership and Nour Hashim for setting a model of corporate citizenship. “It’s important for companies to give back to the communities they work in. I was very touched by the steps taken by Karpowership and Nour Hashim to renovate the orphanage and provide continuous support,” he said.
The Director of Variety Children and Family Services, Francis Lahai, described the renovation as “timely and transformative,” noting that the home supervises over 675 children and works with more than 300 foster parents across Sierra Leone, Guinea and Liberia. He praised Nour Hashim and Karpowership for restoring dignity to the institution and appealed for continued support to expand their facilities.
The Turkish Ambassador to Sierra Leone, H.E. Burak Rende, lauded the project as a reflection of the enduring partnership between Turkey and Sierra Leone, emphasizing that the embassy will continue to support initiatives that prioritize children’s welfare.
Through his philanthropic engagement, Nour Hashim has become a symbol of transformative leadership; one that uses business influence to address real human needs. His words at the event captured that spirit perfectly:
“Together, we didn’t just renovate a building; we reignited hope for hundreds of young lives.”
In an age where development is often measured in infrastructure and investment, Nour Hashim’s actions remind us that true progress lies in compassion; in the quiet yet powerful act of improving the lives of those who have the least. With leaders like him and companies like Karpowership, Sierra Leone’s future shines brighter, not just with electricity but with renewed humanity.
