ELDORET, Kenya, Media Council of Kenya Nakuru regional coordinator Mecha Joseph and Uasin Gishu Journalists Association Chairman James on Wednesday urged the European Union to support the Eldoret Media Hub, describing it as a key center for strengthening media freedom and combating misinformation ahead of Kenya’s next general elections,
The appeal came during a meeting between local journalists and members of the EU diplomatic corps, including Alejandro Vivancos, policy officer for conflict prevention, peace, security and defense partnerships; Cristina Barrios, head of the Political and Information Section; and Dan Schrieiber from the EU Delegation to Kenya.
The discussion focused on ways to enhance collaboration and build the capacity of local reporters. The Eldoret Media Hub, established by the Media Council of Kenya, serves as a workspace and fact-checking center that helps journalists verify information and counter false reports, particularly those spread through artificial intelligence technologies.
“This hub has been instrumental in promoting accuracy and professionalism in journalism,” James said. “As we head toward elections, we seek continued support from partners such as the EU to strengthen fact-checking and training programs for reporters.”
Joseph said the meeting also addressed the need to improve access to information, promote ethical political reporting, and tackle challenges facing journalists including bias, harassment, and interference with press freedom.
“We discussed how to build partnerships that can empower journalists through training and open access to information,” Joseph said. “Working together with diplomatic and development partners is vital to safeguard media independence and enhance professionalism across the country.”
