TWO serious road accidents reported over the weekend have left one person dead and another hospitalised, as police investigate cases of reckless and negligent driving in the Kavango East and ||Karas regions.
According to the weekend crime report, at Aussenkehr on Friday, a 29-year-old woman, identified as Ndano Chibunga, died after jumping from a moving bus-truck during a commotion among passengers. The vehicle, reportedly collecting workers along Mandundu road near Shamwa, Block 5, became chaotic when two men began fighting. Passengers attempted to alert the driver, but he did not stop.
Chibunga then opened the passenger door and jumped out, after which she was run over by the truck’s rear wheel. She was rushed to the Aussenkehr State Clinic, where she succumbed to her injuries. The driver, an adult Namibian male, faces charges of culpable homicide as well as reckless and negligent driving.
In a separate incident, at Divayi village near Divundu, a male pedestrian sustained severe head injuries after being run over by a white Volkswagen Amarok bakkie on the D3403 route between Muhembo and Divundu in the early hours of Saturday. According to police reports, the vehicle was travelling from north to south when it struck the victim, who was lying on the road at the time of the incident.
The driver allegedly failed to stop or render assistance. The victim was rushed to Andara Hospital, where he is receiving medical treatment. A case of reckless and/or negligent driving and failure to render assistance has been opened.
Police investigations into both incidents continue.
