A newborn baby boy was rescued by police in Kuacjok, Warrap State, after being abandoned in a school latrine at Mayen Gumel Secondary School on Saturday morning.
The infant was discovered around 7:00 AM by someone who heard cries coming from the pit latrine. Police responded quickly and rescued the baby, who was found wrapped in cloth and taken to Kuacjok State Hospital for urgent medical care.
“On Saturday the 6th, a woman residing in Block Six gave birth to a baby during the night. She then went to Mayen Gumel Secondary School and abandoned the newborn by throwing the baby into a latrine,” said James Kondok Madut, a civil defense officer.
Authorities later identified the mother, a 23-year-old woman, who was also taken to the hospital after doctors found childbirth complications, including retained placenta and blood clots.
Madut added that the mother initially refused to breastfeed, but her father persuaded her to do so. She had become pregnant outside of marriage and, facing an unintended pregnancy, decided to abandon the child.
Officials confirmed that the mother will face due legal process for the act.
