The Minister of Information and Communication in Upper Nile State has welcomed the resumption of Eye Radio broadcasts in Malakal, saying it will help in promoting public awareness ahead of the upcoming elections.
Eye Radio’s repeater station resumed transmission in Malakal town over the weekend after the German Embassy in Juba funded the installation of solar power systems for repeater stations in Bor, Torit and Malakal.
The Malakal repeater station had been off air for more than six months.
Speaking to Eye Radio this morning, the state minister, Peter Ngwojo, said the reopening of the station will play a key role in fighting misinformation and hate speech, while also strengthening social cohesion in the state.
“The reopening of the Eye Radio repeater station in Malakal will significantly improve public awareness in Upper Nile State. This is something we, as the state government, have discussed extensively: the presence of radio stations helps raise awareness among citizens about misinformation and hate speech, and contributes to strengthening the social fabric,” he said.
He said the absence of credible sources of information had negatively affected the social fabric in Upper Nile State, noting that the return of Eye Radio would help keep citizens informed about national developments.
Ngwojo added that the radio station will also support civic education by providing listeners in Malakal with vital information about the upcoming general elections.
The minister expressed appreciation to Eye Radio and its partners for restoring the repeater station despite financial challenges.
“The social fabric in Malakal, Upper Nile State, needs much work, and we believe that the radio’s message is clear: a message of peace and peaceful coexistence. It will assist us, as the government, in our efforts to restore normalcy to the state. The station will also contribute to explaining the importance, steps, and procedures of the elections to be held next year,” he said.
“I extend my gratitude to Eye Radio and all the partners who contributed to the reactivation of the repeater station in Malakal. Despite the funding challenges faced by organizations, they were able to share what little they had to help communities begin their lives anew,” he said.
