JUBA, United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has called on the South Sudanese government and opposition forces to immediately halt all military operations, warning that escalating violence is deepening civilian suffering and worsening an already dire humanitarian crisis, Jan. 29, 2026.
In a statement issued Wednesday, Guterres expressed deep concern over a recent offensive by the South Sudan People’s Defence Forces in Jonglei State against forces loyal to the Sudan People’s Liberation Army-in-Opposition. The fighting has caused numerous deaths and injuries and displaced tens of thousands of civilians, according to the U.N.
Guterres also warned against inflammatory rhetoric targeting specific communities, saying expanded military action would further compound civilian hardship and risk wider instability.
Government figures show about 250,000 people have been displaced so far in 2026 as a result of ongoing conflict. Guterres called for the protection of civilians, safe and unhindered humanitarian access, and security for U.N. peacekeepers and aid workers.
He urged all parties to pursue inclusive dialogue and political solutions, recalling commitments made under the 2018 peace agreement and stressing the need for a clear roadmap toward credible elections.
The escalation in Jonglei comes amid a broader pattern of intensified clashes between government forces and the SPLA-IO since late 2025. More updates are expected as the situation develops.
