US President Donald Trump has extended an invitation to Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi to join the Peace Council in Gaza.
During a joint press conference with his Bosnian counterpart, Elmedin Konaković on Saturday, Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty said that the formation of the council is part of the requirements of the UN Security Council resolution stipulating the establishment of a Peace Council, to be chaired by Trump and comprising 25 heads of state, including Egypt.
The matter is currently being studied from all angles, he said.
Abdelatty explained that it is important for Trump to remain engaged in implementing the 20-point plan and fulfilling the requirements of the Security Council resolution.
The head of Egyptian General Intelligence, Hassan Rashad, discussed with the head of the Palestinian National Committee for the Administration of the Gaza Strip, Ali Shaath, Egypt’s ongoing efforts to support the ceasefire in Gaza, establish stability, and support Palestinian arrangements for managing the transitional phase.
The AlQahera News Channel reported that during the meeting, Rashad emphasized Egypt’s unwavering commitment to the success of the committee’s work and Cairo’s full readiness to support it in fulfilling its tasks, thereby improving living conditions in Gaza.
Shaath praised the significant efforts exerted by Egypt and the pivotal role of President Sisi, affirming the Palestinian people’s appreciation for Egypt’s steadfast position, particularly regarding the rejection of the displacement of Palestinians and the preservation of the Palestinian cause.
Egypt affirmed its full readiness to support the Palestinian National Committee for the Administration of the Gaza Strip in carrying out its tasks.
UN hails ‘Egypt’s tireless efforts’
The UN Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process, Nikolay Mladenov, said that the tireless efforts of Egypt and other mediators have paved the way for the transition to the second phase of the ceasefire in Gaza.
Mladenov explained that this phase involved extensive consultations with the Palestinian people and the Palestinian Authority, culminating in the establishment of the National Committee for the Administration of Gaza.
He indicated that the committee will be authorized to manage all civil and security matters in the Gaza Strip, provide services to the population, coordinate the delivery of humanitarian aid, and lead early recovery efforts and the future reconstruction process.
Palestine Liberation Organization Executive Committee member Ahmed Majdalani said that forming the committee restores Palestinian national legitimacy and puts an end to attempts to create parallel leadership centers.
However, Palestinian political analyst Nizar Nazzal warned that the Peace Council is an American project that could effectively lead to the separation of Gaza from the rest of the Palestinian territories, the marginalization of the Palestinian Authority, and the weakening of the political role of the resistance.
