A South Sudanese-Australian footballer and international advocate, Nelly Jiath Yoa, has appealed to the United States government to lift its visa travel ban on South Sudan, citing the need for renewed diplomatic engagement to support peace and development in the country.
According to a statement seen by Eye Radio, Yoa held a high-level meeting in Washington on January 9 with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and David Bailey, a senior adviser to President Donald Trump.
During the meeting, Yoa called on the U.S. administration to immediately remove the travel restrictions, arguing that stronger diplomatic ties between Juba and Washington are essential for promoting peace, stability, economic cooperation, and long-term development in South Sudan.
He said improved relations would also enhance regional security, support humanitarian response efforts, and advance democratic progress in the country.
In response, Secretary of State Marco Rubio welcomed the engagement and said the New Year presents an opportunity for both countries to strengthen bilateral relations.
“The New Year offers a fresh opportunity for both nations to work hand in hand toward a brighter, more peaceful, and more successful South Sudan,” the statement quoted Rubio as saying.
The meeting comes amid growing international attention on South Sudan’s future and the role of diplomacy in advancing peace, partnership, and prosperity.
