South Sudan and Sudan have discussed strengthening cooperation in electricity production, staff training, and the exchange of technical expertise, following a Thursday meeting between the Minister of Energy and Dams and the Sudanese Ambassador in Juba.
According to state-run broadcaster SSBC, the Minister of Energy and Dams, Honorable Agok Makur Kur, met with Sudan’s Ambassador to South Sudan, Essam Mohamed Hassan Karrar, to explore ways of developing South Sudan’s energy sector by drawing on Sudan’s experience in energy and dam development.
The meeting focused on mechanisms to increase electricity production, train South Sudanese technicians, organize exchange visits between the two countries’ energy ministries, and explore cooperation in renewable energy and dam projects.
Speaking after the meeting, Minister Agok said the discussions would help South Sudan benefit from Sudan’s experience.
“We discussed how to develop energy in South Sudan and take advantage of Sudan’s experience in the field of energy and dams,” he said.
He added that both countries also talked about staff training. “We discussed the training of South Sudanese staff by Sudan, as well as exchange visits at both ministerial and technical levels,” he said.
The Minister described the visit as a strong motivation for his ministry. “This visit is a main motivation for us in the Ministry of Energy and Dams,” he said. “It shows the positive and strong relations between the two countries.”
He also acknowledged Sudan’s role in supporting peace in South Sudan. “We spoke with him in his capacity as President of Sudan, a guarantor of the active peace agreement. We assured him we are part of the national unity government and that we will continue this peace and ensure its implementation until the end,” Minister Agok added.
For his part, Ambassador Essam Mohamed Hassan Karrar described the meeting as a practical step toward closer cooperation. “We discussed developing bilateral relations between the Ministries of Energy and Dams in Sudan and South Sudan,” he said. “We also talked about improving electricity production in South Sudan by benefiting from Sudanese experience,” he added.
The ambassador expressed optimism about future projects. “God willing, in the coming days, there will be joint energy and dam projects for both countries, serving the interests of the people of Sudan and South Sudan,” he said.
The meeting comes as South Sudan continues to face challenges in electricity supply, with the government seeking regional partnerships to improve access to energy and support development.
