HARGEISA (Somaliguardian) – Somaliland President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi Irro met Israeli President Isaac Herzog and Eric Trump, the son of U.S. President Donald Trump, in Davos on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum’s 2026 annual meeting, Somaliland’s state television reported on Thursday.
The broadcaster said Irro also held discussions with other international business leaders, focusing on potential investment opportunities in Somaliland.
Herzog confirmed the meeting in a post on X, where he said he welcomed the establishment of diplomatic relations with Somaliland and expressed his expectation of closer cooperation for the benefit of both sides.
The meeting followed days of speculation over Irro’s whereabouts after reports emerged that he had travelled abroad without public disclosure of his destination. On Wednesday, Irro posted two images on social media, one showing him aboard a VIP helicopter and another showing him standing beside the same helicopter, with a backdrop that many observers said appeared to be in Switzerland.
Israel recognised Somaliland last month, a move opposed by many in the international community as well as by Somalia’s federal government. Mogadishu said the decision contravened international law and risked fuelling further conflict in the Horn of Africa, adding that it would not alter what it described as the reality that Somaliland remains part of Somalia’s territory.
