HARGEISA (Somaliguardian) – Somaliland has entered an unprecedented era of heightened security since Israel recognized the self-declared republic last month, citing escalating threats from Somalia’s federal government, Al-Shabaab, and Yemen’s Houthis.
The region’s president Abdirahman Irro has made clear that recognition has earned the self-declared republic formidable adversaries, urging citizens to maintain constant vigilance and to cooperate proactively with security forces.
The presidential complex is now heavily fortified, with additional troops safeguarding the president and his family. Security deployments extend to all government headquarters, where entry is strictly controlled and limited to those carrying valid national identity cards.
Movement across the region has been placed under tight regulation. Citizens must carry regional identification at all times, with police warning that anyone traveling without it will be subject to enforcement action.
Major urban centers are under rigorous vehicle inspections, with no exceptions – not even ambulances or water tankers. Authorities have further mandated that no individual may check into hotels, reside in homes, or rent vehicles without presenting valid identification, with strict penalties for violations.
Residents are encouraged to monitor local activity vigilantly and to share intelligence proactively with security forces. The government emphasizes that community cooperation is essential to pre-empting security threats.
Al-Shabaab, which carried out deadly suicide bombings in Hargeisa in 2008, has issued threats of military action should Israel establish a military presence in Somaliland, signaling a volatile chapter in the region’s security landscape.
