ALL the passengers escaped unhurt when one of Silas Ndapuka’s buses, which was travelling from the North to Windhoek, caught fire on the B1 road on Wednesday evening.
Much of the luggage was destroyed by the fire inside the bus, but there are no reports of any injuries.
The incident occurred at Omutsegwonime at around 22:00.
According to one of the passengers, Potgieter Vilho, the bus experienced what was initially thought to be an ordinary mechanical problem, and the driver stopped the vehicle some distance from a filling station at Omutsegwonime to await another bus that would take over the trip to Windhoek.
He said the driver notified the passengers, telling them to disembark and wait to board another bus that would arrive shortly. That was when fire was spotted underneath the bus.
All the available fire extinguishers, including those from the nearby filling station, were not enough to bring the fire under control. The bus was completely burnt by the time the police’s emergency services and the Omuthiya Town firefighters arrived at the scene almost an hour later.
The passengers boarded another bus around midnight and have since arrived safely in Windhoek.
