BOR, Jonglei State (Eye Radio) – The Government of Jonglei State has issued a strong appeal to its citizens to remain in their homes and refrain from fleeing to Central Equatoria State, maintaining that the security situation in the northern counties is being actively addressed.
The appeal follows recent displacement caused by clashes between government forces and the SPLA-IO in northern areas, including Yuai and Uror counties. Reports from the Relief and Rehabilitation Commission (RRC) in Twic East indicate that over 500 households recently arrived in the county from neighboring Duk County seeking safety.
Despite these movements, the Jonglei State Minister of Information and Communication, Nyamar Lony Thichot, told the press this afternoon that the state is currently stable.
“The government of Jonglei State wishes to assure all citizens to remain calm and stay in their homes,” Minister Nyamar stated. She noted that the Governor of Jonglei State, Dr. Riek Gai Kok, recently conducted an extensive tour of the affected counties to personally reassure communities.
“The Governor met with internally displaced persons (IDPs), including those from Uror currently sheltering in Duk Padiet. He reassured citizens that the situation is under control and that there is no need to flee toward other states,” she added.
Addressing the humanitarian needs of those already displaced, the Minister revealed that the state government convened an extraordinary Council of Ministers meeting on Saturday to organize a formal response.
Special committees have been established to coordinate support for civilians arriving from Uror County who are now situated in Duk and Ayod.
“One of the committees is dedicated specifically to IDPs,” Nyamar explained. “At present, IDPs are located in Duk, Ayod, and Poktap. The state government is mobilizing resources to provide temporary shelters, food, and non-food items to support those affected.”
Regarding the specific areas of conflict, the Minister clarified that while an incident occurred recently in Pajut, the situation has since normalized.
She emphasized that security forces are working to ensure that stability returns to Duk and Ayod counties, making it unnecessary for residents to seek refuge in Juba or other parts of Central Equatoria.
The government maintains that staying within the state will allow for more efficient delivery of humanitarian aid and a faster return to communal stability.
