Marius van der Merwe’s widow has penned a heartfelt tribute to the slain Madlanga Commission of Inquiry witness on social media, saying she loves him “forever”.
Van der Merwe, 41, was gunned down outside his Brakpan home on Friday night.
His wife, Leanne van der Merwe, was with him at the time.
On Saturday, she took to social media platform TikTok and posted a video montage of him and their children eating out and spending time outdoors.
“How do I say goodbye? How do I carry on never seeing you again? … I love you forever babe, always”, the post was captioned.
Marius van der Merwe, who appeared before the commission anonymously in November as “Witness D”, was gunned down outside his home by two men in front of Leanne.
The comments section was flooded with messages of condolences.
“Sis, you’re not alone. Your husband’s courage shook this nation, and his light didn’t die – it lives in all of us. May you feel strength in every breath, and may this country hold you the way he would’ve. We honor him. We hold you,” read one.
Another read: “I am so sorry for your loss, we as a community of Brakpan will forever remember Vlam and for what he did for our City we carry this heartache with [you], please know that u have a community with u and that in this time of total disbelieve [sic] we hope that u wil forever see him as he will forever own Brakpan he was a good man. During his testimony at the commission approximately three weeks ago, Van der Merwe implicated several police and private security officials – including himself and disgraced EMPD deputy chief Julius Mkhwanazi – in a murder cover-up, in which he admitted to disposing of the body of a suspect who was allegedly tortured.
He said he feared if he did not go along with the conspiracy, he would be next.
On Sunday, police said that no arrests had been made and the investigation was still ongoing.
