A 38-year-old woman has been arrested after allegedly shooting and killing her neighbour’s four-year-old child in Temba, north of Pretoria.
The incident occurred on Sunday at around 18:30 in the Chris Hani Village while the woman was reportedly testing her gun.
According to information provided by the police, the child was playing outside with other children when the neighbour discharged her licensed firearm.
“It is suggested that the woman was testing her firearm, a 9mm Glock, inside the yard and shot the child,” said police spokesperson Warrant Officer Marinda Austin.
“The child was rushed to Temba Clinic, where he was certified dead.”

Austin said police received a call from Temba Clinic about the deceased, who had been shot in the right armpit.
She said the 38-year-old woman was arrested for murder, negligent handling of a firearm, and discharging a firearm in a municipal area.
“Police also seized the firearm,” she said.
The suspect is expected to appear in the Temba Magistrate’s Court soon.
Temba’s station commander, Brigadier Johannes Tau, condemned the incident, warning firearm owners to exercise caution.
