The police are investigating a case of arson after a devastating fire swept through Augrabies Intermediate School in the Northern Cape on Friday afternoon, leaving nine classrooms and the administration block in ruins.

A massive fire swept through Augrabies Intermediate School in the Northern Cape on Friday afternoon, leaving nine classrooms and the administration block in ruins.
According to the Northern Cape education department, nine classrooms and the administration block – along with equipment and school files – were destroyed in the blaze.
“At this stage, it is not clear what triggered the fire,” spokesperson Geoffrey van der Merwe said.
“The principal has opened a case of arson with the SAPS (South African Police Service). We further appeal to the general public or any individual with information to come forward and report it to the SAPS.”

He added that the department would send its infrastructure unit to the school for a formal assessment, after which the necessary assistance would be provided.
Police confirmed that a case was under investigation and said no injuries or fatalities were reported.
