Germany is in talks with South Africa over a further €720 million (almost R12 billion) in climate-related concessional loans, Rainer Baake, a government official for the European nation, said.
The loans would fall under the so-called Just Energy Transition Partnership (JETP), a climate-finance pact between South Africa and some of the world’s richest nations, Baake, Germany’s envoy for the JETP, said at a press conference in Pretoria on Friday.

In total, Germany has pledged €2.68 billion in climate assistance to South Africa under the programme, compared with an initial €986 million commitment, he said.
Bloomberg reported earlier in the week that the UK and the African Development Bank (AfDB) extended a climate-linked $1 billion (about R16.3 billion) debt guarantee to South Africa, saving a $400 million municipal funding deal that was in jeopardy if it had expired, also in terms of the JETP.
