King Trump’s rampage: Can the world survive?
In case you didn’t get the memo, the world as you know it is changing. US President Donald Trump, who has just entered his second term, is largely the driving force behind a shifting international order.
On Christmas Day, the Trump administration bombed Nigeria. A few days into the New Year, Trump’s America captured Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and then transferred him to New York to face drug-trafficking charges. Now, Greenland is Trump’s next target.
The Trump administration hasn’t limited its use of force to foreign affairs. Domestically, the administration’s aggressive push of the America First doctrine has come at a steep cost, resulting in the deaths of American civilians at the hands of anti-immigration agents.
In this week’s Friday Briefing, we ask: Can the world survive another three years of King Trump?
In our first submission, News24’s investigative editor Pieter du Toit reflects on whether Trump’s project of power and authoritarianism is complete. You can read his analysis here.
We also have a contribution from author John Matisonn, who considers whether the killing of American citizens by masked immigration agents may have triggered the start of Trump’s political downfall. You can read his submission here.
Finally, the Centre for Risk Analysis’ Ofentse Donald Davhie examines what Trump’s presidency reveals about the true nature of power in American democracy. Click here to read his full contribution.
