The Edo State Command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency said on Wednesday that it arrested two suspected traffickers and seized 763kg of skunk cannabis in the state.
The state commander, Mitchell Ofoyeju, disclosed this in a statement, noting that the arrests and seizures were part of the agency’s pre-Yuletide drug control strategies.
He added that two vehicles were impounded during the operation, describing the seizures as significant efforts toward ridding the state of illicit drugs during the festive season.
He stated, “The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, Edo State Command, has successfully intercepted large consignments of skunk cannabis in two separate operations, resulting in the seizure of over 763 kilogrammes of the illicit substance and the arrest of two suspected traffickers.
“Both seizures are impressive efforts toward ridding the state of illicit drugs during the end-of-year festive season.
“The agency remains resolute in its commitment to curbing the production, trafficking, and distribution of illicit drugs in the state.
“These arrests and seizures demonstrate our unwavering dedication to eradicating drug-related crimes that threaten the safety and well-being of our communities, especially as we approach the festive period,” he said.
According to Ofoyeju, the first operation was carried out on December 2, 2025, when officers intercepted two Honda Accord vehicles at Agho Forest in the Akoko Edo Local Government Area.
He said the vehicles were found transporting compressed dried weeds suspected to be skunk cannabis, with the first vehicle (registration number ABC-678KK) containing 341 compressed packages weighing 217.5 kilogrammes, and its 56-year-old driver, Dada Babawibi, arrested at the scene.
Ofoyeju added that the second vehicle, with registration number GGE-772FB, was loaded with 361 compressed packages weighing 230 kilogrammes.
He noted that the driver fled and is currently being tracked by the agency, adding that the total weight of cannabis seized from both vehicles amounted to 447.5 kilogrammes.
He continued, “In another raid on December 4, 2025, NDLEA operatives, acting on intelligence, arrested Stanley Obasuwa, aged 36, at a warehouse in the Isiefve community, Uhunwonde LGA, Edo State.
“The raid led to the seizure of eight bags of cannabis sativa seeds weighing a total of 315.8 kilogrammes, stored in a makeshift structure on the outskirts of the community.
“Investigations are ongoing as operatives continue to track other suspects and dismantle drug networks operating within Edo State.
“Members of the public are urged to support the NDLEA by providing credible information that can aid the fight against drug trafficking.”
PUNCH had reported that the command recently arrested two people transporting cannabis along the Benin–Akure Road.
The arrests were made on November 13 during a patrol by operatives of the command.
