JUBA, The South Sudan government on Tuesday called on the Sudan People’s Liberation Army–in Opposition to cease hostilities and fully recommit to the Revitalized Agreement on the Resolution of the Conflict in the Republic of South Sudan, as fighting intensified in parts of Northern Jonglei State,
Government Spokesperson and Minister of Information Ateny Wek Ateny said during a press briefing that government forces had halted the movement of opposition fighters accused of causing insecurity and destruction in the area.
Ateny said residents of Akobo, Nyirol and Uror counties who fled their homes due to the fighting were assured of their safety and urged civilians to remain cautious and avoid areas of active military engagement to prevent being caught in crossfire.
He said the ongoing military operation in Northern Jonglei was lawful and necessary to stop the advance of armed groups, restore public order and protect civilians, emphasizing that the operation targets only armed elements threatening peace and stability.
Ateny reaffirmed the government’s commitment to peace and civilian protection and called on all parties to the peace agreement to exercise restraint and prioritize national unity and stability in the interest of the South Sudanese people.
