The Assistant Medical Director at Juba Teaching Hospital has dismissed reports of a strike at the facility, saying recent disruptions were caused by technical problems rather than staff action.
Speaking to Eye Radio in an exclusive interview, Dr. Michael Yohane Tongun said the hospital experienced challenges after a machine used to sterilize surgical instruments broke down.
“This forced the temporary suspension of operations for several days,” he explained.
Dr. Tongun said the machine has since been repaired and that the operation theatre is now fully functional, with services resuming as normal.
“To confirm to you, basically, there was no strike in the hospital, especially regarding why some patients were not operated on,” Dr. Tongun said.
“We were having issues with machines, which are important for the sterilization of instruments in the operation theatre. The machine broke down, and for some days the operation theatre was not working. But now it has been fixed, and the theatre is functioning.”
Dr. Tongun further refuted claims circulating on social media about a hospital shutdown, saying Juba Teaching Hospital never stopped providing services.
He explained that a brief work stoppage by some intern doctors lasted only a few hours and was caused by a misunderstanding over facilitation, which was resolved the same day.
Dr. Tongun urged the public to rely on credible sources of information and assured patients that Juba Teaching Hospital continues to operate normally.
