Ichung’wah Slams JB Muturi: ‘He Has Diminished Himself and the Integrity of Parliament’
National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah has expressed profound disappointment over the conduct of former National Assembly Speaker Justin Muturi, who became involved in a physical confrontation with a young man at the Siakago polling station on Thursday, November 27, 2025.
The incident occurred as the National Assembly was paying tribute to former minister and Democratic Party member Justice Munyao on the same day. Ichung’wah described the timing as both ironic and disheartening.
The Kikuyu MP lamented that the Democratic Party, once a vibrant force under the late Munyao, is now only a shadow of its former self.
“It is shameful for our former Speaker, JB Muturi, to allow himself to act this way, even amid the frustration of losing elections. Elections will come and go, but the respect earned as an elder, a former Speaker, a former Cabinet Secretary, a former Attorney General, a grandfather, a father, and a husband should never be compromised,” Ichung’wah said.
The Majority Leader added that witnessing a former Speaker clash with young local residents, many the age of his grandchildren, was both shocking and embarrassing. He noted that the late Munyao, whom they were honouring, would have been deeply disappointed to see members of his party engaging in such behavior.
Ichung’wah suggested that Muturi’s confrontation stemmed from his awareness that his candidate, Newton Karish, was likely to lose in the by-election polls. However, he emphasized that regardless of election outcomes, respect for one’s legacy as an elder, a former Speaker, Cabinet Secretary, Attorney General, grandfather, father, and husband should never be compromised.
The Majority Leader also underscored the significance of the Speaker’s office, which is the third most powerful position in Kenya.
“JB Muturi has diminished not only himself but also the integrity of this House. I am deeply ashamed to have had a Speaker who could behave in such a manner,” Ichung’wah said.
