Gachagua Downplays Mbeere North Loss, Eyes Nairobi as DCP’s Political Stronghold
Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua is turning his focus to Nairobi, aiming to make the city the stronghold for his party’s growth after criticism over the recent by-election results.
Speaking during a Thanksgiving event in Kariobangi North on Sunday, November 30, 2025, Gachagua said the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) had made significant gains in the capital. He revealed details of a strategic political agreement between DCP and Wiper Party ahead of the 2027 elections.
“Mimi niseme watu ya Kariobangi asanteni sana. DCP is the party for Nairobi.
Gachagua outlined the specific seats the two parties agreed to divide:
He stressed that the deal demonstrated a clear DCP plan for Nairobi and asserted that the party would capture most seats in the city.
Addressing the recent by-election debates, Gachagua dismissed claims that the Mbeere North outcome signaled declining influence in Mt Kenya politics.
Chama ambaye ni ya mwezi saba imechukua viti tatu out of five,” he said.
He added that his visit to Mbeere aimed only to support the Democratic Party candidate, who he claimed was unfairly denied victory, emphasizing that his priority remained building DCP into a national party.
“Lakini sisi we focus on our party, DCP. Na hapa Nairobi nataka DCP ishinde. Hapa Kariobangi tulishinda UDA walikuwa namba 4, Narok tulishinda UDA, Kisa East tulishinda UDA na ODM. Hiyo hawaongei.”
The Kariobangi North event, however, turned chaotic as rival groups clashed before and during the Thanksgiving ceremony for newly elected MCA David Wanyoike Warui. The violence disrupted parts of the gathering, prompting Gachagua to accuse the government of intimidation.
“Every time you plan to disrupt our meetings and beat up people, you are losing further, and this community hatred towards you grows. If you think you can make these people embrace you through intimidation and violence, you are misguided,” he said.
