
A fire outbreak on Wednesday afternoon damaged parts of Abbatuwa cemetery in Fagge Local Government Area of Kano State, the Kano State Fire Service has said.
In a statement issued on January 22, 2026, by the Public Relations Officer of the Service, Saminu Yusif Abdullahi, the agency explained that the incident was reported around mid-day.
According to the statement, “On Wednesday, 21 January 2026, at about 14:02 hrs, the Agency’s Control Room received a distress call from Bashir Hassan reporting an outbreak of fire at Abbatuwa cemetery in Fagge local government area.”
Firefighters were immediately deployed from the agency’s headquarters to the scene.
The statement said, “Immediately our men from the Agency’s Headquarters mobilize to the scene of incident. On arrival they found that some part of the cemetery on fire, which had spread rapidly due to the presence of dry grasses within the premises.”
Fire service personnel began firefighting operations to contain the blaze and stop it from spreading further.
“Our men commenced operations and worked to extinguish the fire, and prevent it from spreading to the other areas,” the statement added.
Although the fire was eventually brought under control, several sections of the cemetery were badly affected. The fire service confirmed that no life was lost and no injuries recorded during the incident.
The agency said preliminary findings suggest that the fire may have been caused by human activities.
Following the incident, the Kano State Fire Service warned members of the public to be cautious, especially in areas with dry vegetation.
The statement urged residents, particularly smokers, to avoid smoking or carrying naked flames within cemetery premises and other places with dry grass to prevent future occurrences.
The agency also reaffirmed its commitment to the safety of residents, stressing that it remains dedicated to protecting lives and property across the state.
