BISHOFTU, Ethiopia (Eye Radio) – Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed officially opened the Aviation Expo 2026 on Friday, January 23, 2026, to celebrate the 90th anniversary of the Ethiopian Air Force.
Under the slogan “Let’s enter the future of aviation together,” the Prime Minister launched the event to showcase Ethiopia’s growth as a regional hub for technology, innovation, and military excellence.
The Prime Minister was accompanied by First Lady Zinash Tayachew and Field Marshal Birhanu Jula, Chief of Staff of the Ethiopian National Defense Forces.
Their presence highlighted the national importance of the expo, which demonstrates Ethiopia’s commitment to modernization and strengthening international partnerships in the aviation sector.
The anniversary celebration, dubbed “The Lions of the Ethiopian Sky,” features a historic aerial exhibition marking nearly a century of aviation history. A massive fleet of over 50 jet fighters and various specialized aircraft took part in the display, showing the rapid modernization of the country’s air defense.
The event also hosted the third African Air Force Forum at Horarsede Hall. High-level delegations, including air force commanders from 35 African countries and representatives from 10 nations outside of Africa, gathered in Bishoftu to witness the display. The forum aims to help African nations work together more closely on security and technology.
Defense Minister Ayisha Mohammed described the Air Force as a “national treasure” and a source of pride for all of Africa. She stated that the institution serves as a model for the continent and urged African air forces to build stronger “brotherhood” through shared skills and technological transition.
The 90th-anniversary festivities will continue with breathtaking air and ground shows, proving Ethiopia’s leading role in the African defense landscape.
