“Enemy of the People”: Muturi Warns Kenya Kwanza Moles Trying to Divide Opposition
Leaders of the United Opposition have pledged to remain united and rally behind whichever candidate emerges to challenge President William Ruto in the next presidential election, insisting that national interests outweigh individual ambitions.
The leaders spoke during the Democratic Party’s National Delegates Congress (NDC) held at Ufungamano House in Nairobi, where they presented a united front and reiterated their commitment to collective leadership and political cohesion.
During the congress, former National Assembly Speaker Justin Muturi was confirmed as the Democratic Party leader and its presidential candidate, a move that drew support from across the opposition spectrum.
The high-profile meeting brought together key opposition figures, including former Deputy President and Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua, former Interior Cabinet Secretary and Jubilee presidential candidate Fred Matiang’i, People’s Liberation Party (PLP) leader Martha Karua, DAP-K leader Eugene Wamalwa, and Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka.
Addressing delegates, Muturi claimed there were deliberate attempts to undermine the unity of the United Opposition by elements linked to the Kenya Kwanza administration.
“They were even looking for a person to compete with me in DP in the NDC so that I do not become the flagbearer,” Muturi said.
“Let me make this clear: whoever is bought by detractors to sow disunity amongst us is the enemy of the people.”
Muturi struck an optimistic tone about the country’s future, saying Kenya still has a chance to get back on track.
“United opposition stands firm,” he declared, adding that the country is not beyond repair.
PLP leader Martha Karua said the shared determination to remove the Kenya Kwanza administration from power continues to bind opposition leaders together.
“We have one purpose: to bring good leadership. We have to unite to liberate Kenya,” Karua said.
Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka echoed the message, assuring Kenyans that opposition unity remains intact and is key to defeating President Ruto.
Former Interior CS Fred Matiang’i dismissed claims that the opposition alliance would collapse, warning that those banking on disunity would be disappointed.
Rigathi Gachagua also projected confidence, saying opposition leaders would work together to present Kenyans with a formidable candidate capable of ending President Ruto’s tenure after one term.
“Do not be worried. The Kenyan population will make Ruto a one-term president,” Gachagua told the delegates.
The show of unity at the Democratic Party NDC signals renewed momentum within the United Opposition as leaders intensify efforts to consolidate support and position themselves as a credible alternative ahead of the next general election.
