The Governor of Eastern Equatoria State, Louis Lobong Lojore, says calm has returned to Narus town following reports of heavy fighting on the outskirts of the area earlier on Thursday.
Governor Lobong says some criminals attempted to raid Narus, the administrative capital of Kapoeta East County earlier in the day but the situation is now under control.
Speaking to Eye Radio this afternoon, Governor Lobong said authorities are still assessing the incident but confirmed that security has been restored in the town.
He explained that the attackers, whom he referred to as SPLA-IO, fired shots from a distance on the outskirts of Narus before fleeing after security forces responded.
“We are still assessing the situation. There is not much I can say at the moment, but there was a raid by some criminals who fired shots toward Narus from a distance. You will understand the situation as we gather more information,” he said.
“They call themselves rebels. They refer to themselves as IO, but we will find out more details. It was on the outskirts of the town. It is calm. The situation is okay. They shoot and run. That is their pattern,” he added.
The governor urged residents to remain calm, assuring them that security forces have been deployed to protect the town.
“The state government and the security forces are doing their work. I am telling people to remain calm. There are forces on the ground, and the youth of the area will help handle the situation. Yes, I am assuring them. These are just criminals,” he stated.
