The Lagos Country Club, Ikeja, hosted its New Year Party and Awards Night on Friday, January 30, 2026, drawing an array of executives, government officials, and prominent socialites from various sectors.
The event opened with a welcome address by the Club President, Seyi Adewunmi, who spoke on the values the club represents, its upcoming projects, and the need for continued support from members, associates, and the Lagos State Government toward the club’s expansion and growth.
“I welcome you all to the 2026 New Year’s party. Looking around this beautifully decorated venue and our members and guests, I am reminded of the indomitable resilience of Lagos people. After a challenging period and the unavoidable course of our celebrations in 2025, we gather tonight as one family, renewed in spirit, clear in our purpose, and stronger in our resolve. Today, we are not merely marking the start of another year, but celebrating a triumphant return to family,” Adewunmi said.
He added that the club was hopeful for collaborations that would deliver tangible benefits, particularly for young people, noting that growth requires collective support.
“Your Excellency, Mr Governor, while we are expecting the body of professionals, our ambitions for infrastructure renewal are vast. As a patron and a leader who understands the power of institutions, we invite you to actively support this group. In the meantime, today is a day of celebration,” he said.
Speaking to journalists at the event, the Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Kolawole Oyefeso, commended the club’s leadership for sustaining and improving on existing standards.
“Having listened to the address of the president, the next level is to continue to upgrade whatever we’ve been doing over the years, and that is exactly what the president and the management are doing,” Oyefeso said.
He also advised new members to build on the club’s legacy. “This is a great club, brought about by the collective efforts of past officers and presidents. My advice is to continue to build upon the legacy you met,” he added.
The Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, was represented at the event by the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotosho, who highlighted some of the challenges the state faced in 2025, including the fire at the Great Nigeria Insurance House, as well as notable achievements such as hosting the E1 Lagos Grand Prix, Africa’s first electric powerboat championship.
“I would like to say that all members of this club should continue to behave here the way they have been behaving in Lagos,” Omotosho said. “You should continue to see the club as a symbol of unity, harmony, and the can-do spirit of our dear state.”
A major highlight of the evening was the presentation of awards to members in recognition of their service and impact within the club. Awards were presented to past presidents and vice presidents of the various sections.
The event also featured a music performance by renowned jùjú singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist, King Sunny Ade, alongside his African Band.
Dignitaries in attendance included the Orimolusi of Ijebu-Igbo, Oba Lawrence Adebajo; Akarigbo of Remoland, Oba Babatunde Ajayi; members of the Board of Trustees and Management Council; and the Chairman of Ikoyi Club 1938, Akinwumi Akintola, among others.
