THE Ministry of Environment has announced the temporary closure of a section of the Okaukuejo–Namutoni Road, effective from 1 February 2026.
“The closure is necessary to allow for the ongoing upgrading of tourist gravel roads to low-volume sealed roads from Okaukuejo to King Nehale Gate, via the Halali detours to Namutoni. Visitors travelling eastwards from Okaukuejo are therefore advised to continue using the designated Gemsbokvlakte detour and then proceed onto the newly constructed bypass for approximately 38 km, where it will cross over the main road and connect with the existing Salvadora detour,” the ministry said.
The ministry explained that traffic will proceed along the Salvadora detour until it intersects with the main road at approximately 47 km from Okaukuejo during this period.
“During the first phase of the new deviation, traffic will be temporarily redirected back onto the main road just before the Homob comfort stop while the contractor completes the remaining section of the new bypass,” the ministry explained.
The ministry further revealed that the entire bypass is expected to be completed by 26 February 2026, at which point traffic will be fully redirected onto the bypass and the associated Salvadora detour route.
“All tourists, visitors and service providers entering the park are urged to follow the instructions displayed on road signs and to strictly adhere to speed limits, park rules and regulations. Everyone is advised to exercise caution and be mindful of construction vehicles operating in the area. The Ministry appreciates the cooperation and understanding of all tourists, visitors and service providers in this regard and apologises for any inconvenience this may cause. Any changes to this arrangement will be communicated,” the ministry added.
