The Bauchi State-owned university, Sa’adu Zungur University, on Wednesday matriculated 4,024 students for the 2025/2026 academic session, with the management declaring zero tolerance for cultism and other social vices.
The Vice-Chancellor of the university, Fatima Tahir, made the declaration at the 13th matriculation ceremony held at the Yuli Campus of the institution.
Represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), Bala Ma’aji, Tahir said the ceremony was the fourth to be conducted under her administration since she assumed office.
She explained that the matriculation formally qualified the students as bona fide members of the university community after taking the oath of allegiance.
“I therefore use this medium to congratulate the successful candidates for gaining admission in the 2025/2026 academic session. Out of 9,378 applicants shortlisted, only 4,024 were offered admission, while over 4,000 qualified candidates could not be accommodated,” she said.
The Vice-Chancellor assured parents and guardians that the university would continue to uphold academic integrity and protect the interests of their wards.
She warned that the institution had zero tolerance for anti-social behaviours such as cultism, examination malpractice, sexual harassment, drug abuse, indecent dressing, truancy, vandalism and the sorting of lecturers by students.
“The university will not hesitate to take necessary disciplinary measures against any student found wanting. The oath you have taken today is a commitment to abide by the laws, statutes and regulations of the university,” she added.
Tahir also advised the students to be security-conscious and to report suspicious activities to the university authorities.
She commended the Bauchi State Government under Governor Bala Mohammed for its support to education, as well as Shell Petroleum Development Company for constructing an ICT centre at the Gadau Campus and TETFund for building 48 female hostels at the Yuli Campus.
The Vice-Chancellor further urged host communities to intensify efforts in ensuring security, noting that the institution had experienced security challenges in the previous session.
The breakdown of the newly admitted students showed that the Faculty of Science had the highest number with 935, followed by Social Sciences with 877, Management Sciences with 587, Basic Medical Sciences with 507, Education with 461, Agriculture with 335, Arts with 205, Law with 59 and Pharmaceutical Sciences with 58.
Out of the total number, 1,434 are female, while 2,590 are male.
In May 2025, the Vice Chancellor of Wesley University, Ondo State, Samuel Obeka, has warned new students of the institution against engaging in acts that are against the rules and regulations of the varsity.
Obeka declared that the university had zero tolerance for indiscipline and social vices that could lead to their premature exit from the school.
