THIS week’s rain showers have so far been largely concentrated in the Kavango, Oshikoto and Otjozondjupa regions, with several areas in these regions recording consistent rainfall.
Mashare, in the Kavango East Region, recently received particularly heavy showers, recording around 70 millimetres (mm) of rain on Monday, while surrounding areas recorded around 50 mm. This was not the only part of the north-east to witness notable showers recently. Places such as Katima Mulilo and Sangwali in the Zambezi Region also recorded between 35 mm and 40 mm of rain at the start of this week.

The north-eastern regions often see intense rainfall and thunderstorms, and more are expected in the coming days. The public is therefore urged to exercise caution, as thunderstorms and lightning present serious safety risks. Less than two weeks ago, lightning in the Mpungu constituency of Kavango West claimed the life of a 21-year-old man and injured a 26-year-old woman in the same area on the same day.
Beyond the north-eastern parts of the country, several other areas have also seen notable rainfall recently. These include Tsumeb and surrounding parts of the Oshikoto Region. The Otjozondjupa Region, however, has been particularly favoured by recent showers. Otjiwarongo, Grootfontein, Otavi, as well as Okahandja and its surrounding areas, have all experienced notable rainfall in recent days. In fact, Okahandja and neighbouring areas recorded nearly 50 mm of rain on Monday.
