JUBA, In a statement obtained by The Juba Mirror newsroom, the leadership of the South Sudan Opposition Alliance (SSOA) said it has taken note of a statement issued by Hon. Dei Tut Weanghkor on Jan. 23, 2026, in which he purported to act as the acting chairman of SSOA and declared the collapse of the Revitalized Agreement on the Resolution of the Conflict in the Republic of South Sudan (R-ARCSS),
The SSOA leadership categorically rejected and denounced the statement, describing it as misleading and devoid of legitimacy.
“First and foremost, the United Democratic Republic Alliance (UDRA) was never a signatory to the R-ARCSS,” the statement said. “UDRA was later admitted into SSOA membership. Under no circumstances, therefore, can Hon. Dei Tut claim the chairmanship or any leadership position within SSOA.”
The leadership said Dei Tut’s assertion of authority over SSOA structures is “null and void” and has no basis under the SSOA charter.
The statement further noted that on June 11, 2025, while outside the country, Dei Tut publicly declared that he had withdrawn from the government and abandoned his membership in the Transitional National Legislative Assembly (TNLA). According to the SSOA leadership, he was asked whether this decision reflected UDRA’s position.
“His response was that it was a personal decision and that UDRA would continue to be a member of SSOA under a new leader,” the statement said. “That was the last contact we had with him. By this unilateral action, he forfeited any association, mandate or representational authority within SSOA.”
The leadership said UDRA members whom Dei Tut abandoned have since reaffirmed their commitment to SSOA and pledged to continue working under the alliance’s legitimate leadership, chaired by Vice President Josephine Lagu.
“This clearly demonstrates that his personal actions do not reflect the position of UDRA constituencies, nor that of SSOA,” the statement said.
The leadership also pointed out that Dei Tut concluded his statement by identifying himself as chairman of the South Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SSPLM), an organization it described as unknown to SSOA.
“This self-identification is a clear admission that he is acting outside the framework of SSOA, as SSPLM is not, and has never been, a constituent member of SSOA,” the statement said.
The SSOA leadership said this confirmation further underscores that Dei Tut has no legal, political or organizational relationship with SSOA and cannot speak or act on its behalf.
