The South Sudan People’s Defence Forces (SSPDF) has ordered civilians to immediately leave SPLA-IO-controlled areas in Akobo, Nyirol and Uror counties, as the army declares war on the rebel group.
The directive marks a major escalation of tensions between government forces and the SPLA-IO and allied militia, the White Army, following weeks of fighting in parts of Ayod, Duk, Nyirol and Uror counties in northern Jonglei State.
SSPDF spokesperson Major General Lul Ruai Koang said civilians, together with their livestock, should report to SSPDF garrisons for protection.
He warned that any armed civilians found loitering in or around SPLA-IO barracks, assembly areas and rally grounds after the order would be considered legitimate military targets.
The General also said non-governmental organisations operating in the affected areas have been given 48 hours to evacuate, as the army prepares to launch what it calls Operation Enduring Peace.
The rising insecurity has displaced hundreds of civilians, forcing many to flee to parts of Duk and Twic East counties.
On Saturday, medical charity MSF evacuated its critical staff from Akobo County due to the worsening security situation.
The organisation, also known as Doctors Without Borders, said the evacuation was carried out following instructions from authorities and amid mounting tension in the area.
