- Netflix hosted an event for Bridgerton’s fourth season in Cape Town on Saturday.
- The event was attended by Bridgerton actors Masali Baduza, Martins Imhangbe and Emma Naomi.
- Baduza took her co-stars around Cape Town for sightseeing and to experience the city ahead of the event.
Netflix hosted a Bridgerton event at the Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa in Cape Town on Saturday to celebrate the show’s fourth season.
The event was attended by local celebrities and three of the series’ stars: Martins Imhangbe (Will Mondrich), Emma Naomi (Alice Mondrich) and South Africa’s own Masali Baduza (Michaela Stirling).
There were also musical performances, activations and culinary offerings. The theme was AfroCouture Masquerade, which guests used as a basis for some stunning looks that paid homage to African culture.
It was a special moment for Baduza to celebrate Bridgerton’s fourth season on home soil.
“It’s so special to be here. These are ends that I ran around growing up, so to be here with this show, at this point in my career is very special,” she said on the blue carpet.
Baduza also showed her co-stars around Cape Town, even stopping at the Observatory restaurant Ganesh.
She is also looking forward to fans’ reactions to the new season.
“I’m excited for fans to see the wonderful love story between Sophie and Benedict. Luke and Yarin did such an amazing job this season. The chemistry is sensational and I’m also excited for people to see more of Michaela, my character,” she shared.
Baduza said filming the latest season was both overwhelming and exciting.
“I’ve been a huge fan of the show, so stepping into that world was exhilarating and also [had] so many ‘pinch-me moments’,” the actor added.
Naomi said she had a fun week in Cape Town ahead of the event, but wishes she had more time to explore.
“I went to Signal Hill yesterday, we had dinner. I walked on the beach this morning. You guys have a very, very vibrant city,” the actor said.
“Masali is from here and she has shown us around a little bit and it’s been so beautiful. The weather in London is miserable right now, so I’m so excited to be here.”
On her experience during the filming of Season Four, she said:
“This is the most time I’ve been in front of the camera for Bridgerton, so I’ve spent a lot of time with my castmates and they’re amazing.”
“It’s a very different dynamic this season. It’s giving Downton Abbey upstairs, downstairs. I think there are a lot of important questions about love and class, and what does that even mean? Does it matter?”
“No it doesn’t,” she added.
Imhangbe said he also had an amazing time in Cape Town and that this was his second visit to the city.
“I was here 10 years ago. So far, I went to Signal Hill and saw the sunset. We did the dunes with quad biking, which was amazing. We went to one of my favourite places, Ganesh and we had the best food last night,” he shared.
He hailed the Bridgerton’s new cast members, including Isabella Wei and Katie Leung.
“I think we’ve had such an amazing addition to the world. So just expanding on the world of Bridgerton and evolving the storylines has been a dream,” he said.
He thought it was fitting to celebrate the fourth season in South Africa, since Baduza also joined the show.
“I think Masali brings such a freshness and richness. She’s so charismatic and fun, and a free spirit. It’s nice to have her soul in the production.”
Former Miss Universe Zozibini Tunzi also attended the event and said she was excited to be there, as she is a fan of the show.
“I’m a huge Bridgerton fan, and so I was just looking forward to today [and] seeing everyone’s outfits,” the actor and model said. “But, just like everyone else, I’m so excited to see the show.”
She enjoys the show for its focus on romance and family.
“It just has a lot of heart and warmth to it,” she said.
In keeping with the AfroCouture theme, Tunzi wore a black dress covered in metallic shells.
“I immediately wanted to do cowrie shells, because for me they’re just so queenly and African. They used to be used to symbolise royalty back in the day, and so this was my first thought,” she shared.
Actor and musician Khanyi Mbau is also a big fan of the show and said being at the event felt like it was her “birthday”.
“I feel so good. I’m such a Bridgerton fan. It feels like my birthday because I love love, I love fantasy, I love anything that takes me away from my reality and allows me to dream, and I think Bridgerton does that for us,” Mbau said.
“I love the way they always take an era piece and bring it into the now, even with their music. So I’m in awe, guys,” she added.
Dineo Langa and her husband Solo Ntsizwa Ka Mthimkhulu said they had also attended all the preceding Bridgerton events ahead of Saturday and that AfroCouture was their favourite theme.
“I think adding that Africanness this time around definitely makes it feel at home,” Solo said.
On how she interpreted the theme, Langa said:
“For me, it was leaning into our elements. So my top is a wood-inspired plate, and then my skirt is raffia and rattan and all of that. We’ve really showcased traditional garments and fabrics, so I wanted to just lean in more on that Afro element.”
