The Community Empowerment for Progress Organization, CEPO, has congratulated the newly appointed Governor of Lakes State and urged him to set clear priorities that will contribute to lasting peace and development in the state.
In a press release issued in Rumbek on Tuesday, CEPO called on the new governor to focus on improving security and stability across Lakes State and neighboring communities, noting that peace remains the foundation for development.
The organization appealed for the convening of an inclusive conference that would bring together all stakeholders to review the outcomes of previous peace resolutions, particularly those reached in Juba and Rumbek, with the aim of addressing recurring violence and restoring trust among communities.
CEPO also emphasized the need to create a safe environment for civilians, especially in areas affected by persistent insecurity, and called for the protection of human rights across the state.
The statement further urged the state leadership to prioritize the release of detainees being held unlawfully in military detention facilities, describing the move as a necessary step toward reconciliation and the rule of law.
On development, CEPO encouraged the state government to invest in social and economic programs that engage communities, promote dialogue, and address the root causes of conflict. It highlighted economic development, agriculture, and infrastructure as key areas that require urgent attention to improve livelihoods.
The organization concluded by expressing readiness to work with the Lakes State government and other partners to support peacebuilding initiatives and promote sustainable development for the people of the state.
