DOHA (Somaliguardian) – Somalia and Qatar have signed a defense cooperation agreement aimed at strengthening military ties and security collaboration, just days after Mogadishu terminated all agreements with the United Arab Emirates. The deals with the UAE included security and defense cooperation, as well as port management and development.
“Today in Doha, #Somalia and #Qatar inked a historic defense cooperation agreement aimed at strengthening military ties and security collaboration between the two countries,” Somali Defense Minister Ahmed Moalim Fiqi, who signed the deal, said. “We are committed to developing our National Army’s capabilities.”
The agreement comes as Somalia severs ties with the UAE over allegations of infringements on its sovereignty and territorial unity. In the wake of the split, Somalia is seeking support from Saudi Arabia and Qatar to fill the gaps left by the UAE’s withdrawal, which had previously helped pay the salaries of some Somali security forces.
