‘Baba Didn’t Fight for ODM to be an NGO’: Junet Fires Warning to Party Rebels
Suna East Member of Parliament Junet Mohamed on Sunday, January 18, 2026, appeared to launch a thinly veiled attack on ODM Secretary General Edwin Sifuna, laying bare growing internal divisions within the opposition party as it repositions itself ahead of the 2027 General Election and in the aftermath of the death of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.
Speaking during the ODM Linda Ground county tour rally in Kakamega, Junet accused unnamed party figures of undermining ODM’s quest for political power by opposing dialogue with rival parties. He defended the party’s push for a broad-based political alliance and dismissed calls for street protests, insisting that ODM must operate strictly within the law.
Junet Defends Dialogue, Slams Street Politics
Addressing a charged crowd, Junet took issue with party members who resist engagement with government-linked parties. He claimed some leaders panic whenever ODM appears closer to power and prefer confrontation over negotiations. He described ODM as a disciplined political outfit guided by the rule of law and resolutions made by its top decision-making organs.
“Wengi wanataka tukae kwa barabara, wanataka tukae kwa streets wanataka tupigane. Wakiskia ODM imekaribia serikali, wanaanza kupata tumbojoto. Si mnawajua hawa. Mimi nataka kusema hivi, chama ya ODM ni chama ya nidhamu,” Junet told supporters.
ODM Central Committee Approved Talks
Junet revealed that ODM’s central committee had already resolved to open talks with other political parties, starting with President William Ruto’s United Democratic Alliance (UDA). He questioned why individual leaders felt entitled to challenge decisions made by the party’s highest organs, stressing that discipline and unity must prevail.
“Its a party of law and order. Na kamati kuu ya chama imekaa imesema wanataka kufanya mazungumzo na vyama vingine wakianza na chama cha UDA. Sasa wewe ni nani kupinga kamati kuu ya chama,” he said.
‘ODM Was Formed to Seek Power’
The Suna East MP went further to argue that ODM exists to seek and exercise political power, not to operate like a charity organization. He stressed that Raila Odinga founded the party with the goal of forming a government, not distributing aid, and told critics to chart their own path if they disagreed with that mission.
“Sisi tunataka kama ODM tukuwe kwa serikali. Hii chama ya ODM sio NGO ya kupigania relief food. Chama ya ODM ilipiganiwa na Baba to look for political power. Kama wewe unataka kutengeneza NGO enda tengeneza NGO yako, wachia sisi chama chetu,” Junet declared.
Broad-Based Alliances, Not Individual Deals
Junet also made it clear that ODM intends to form alliances with political parties rather than individual leaders. He rejected narrow or personalized arrangements, saying the party would only participate in a broad-based political process ahead of 2027.
“Sisi tunataka tuungane na vyama vingine ili tutengeneze serikali ya 2027. Na tulisema hatuwezi ungana na mtu mmoja. Na pia hatutaungana na mtu yeyote ako na muungano ya nani? Kama wewe unataka kufanya mazungumzo na Wamunyoro, we fanya mazungumzo yako. Sisi pia tuwachiwe tufanye na watu ya broad based,” he stated.
As he wrapped up his remarks, Junet said he had deliberately avoided personal attacks out of respect and maturity. However, he warned that continued insults and provocation from rivals could force him to respond more directly.
