The Chairperson of the African Union Commission (AUC), Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, has praised the conduct of Uganda’s presidential elections and congratulated President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni on his re-election.
In a statement issued on Friday, Youssouf said the African Union “commends the conduct of the elections in Uganda” and congratulated President Museveni on securing victory with 71.61 per cent of the votes cast in the polls held on January 15, 2026.
“The Chairperson congratulates H.E. Yoweri Kaguta Museveni on his re-election and wishes him success in the discharge of his constitutional responsibilities,” the statement read.
Youssouf also praised the leadership of former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan, who headed the Joint African Union–COMESA–IGAD Election Observation Mission to Uganda.
“He expresses his sincere appreciation to H.E. Goodluck Jonathan for his sterling leadership of the Joint Election Observation Mission,” the Chairperson said, noting the mission’s role in strengthening confidence in the electoral process.
Reaffirming the African Union’s broader democratic agenda, Youssouf said the Commission remains committed to supporting democratic governance across the continent.
“The African Union Commission will continue to support the promotion of democracy and effective governance in Africa,” he said.
He further applauded Ugandan citizens for their participation in the electoral process, describing it as vital to national stability and development.
“The Chairperson applauds the people of Uganda for their commitment to consolidating democratic gains, peace, security, and development,” the statement added.
The statement was released by the African Union’s Information and Communication Directorate from its headquarters in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
