CANBERRA, Jan. 17 — Mirra Andreeva beat fellow rising star Victoria Mboko in the Adelaide International women’s singles final on Saturday to claim her fourth career singles title on the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) Tour.
Andreeva, the 18-year-old world No.8, defeated the 17th-ranked 19-year-old Mboko 6-3, 6-1 in one hour and four minutes, lifting the trophy without dropping a set in her four matches at the Australian Open warm-up event.
After losing the first three games to Mboko on Saturday, Andreeva won nine in a row to take control of the final, which marked the first WTA Tour meeting between the only teenagers currently ranked inside the world’s top 25 women.
Mboko took a medical timeout while trailing 3-0 in the second set and held serve in the following game, but was unable to break back.
Andreeva converted her first championship point with a serve up the middle that the Canadian could not return. Women’s champions at the Adelaide International went on to win the Australian Open in 2022, 2023 and 2025.
Andreeva, a round-of-16 finisher at the Australian Open in both 2024 and 2025, has been drawn to play Donna Vekic in the first round of this year’s Grand Slam, which begins in Melbourne on Sunday.
Mboko, making her debut in the Australian Open main draw, will face Australian wildcard Emerson Jones in the first round. (Namibia Daily News/Xinhua)
