President Salva Kiir has assured the African Union of the government’s commitment to peace and stability following a visit by the AU delegation to the statehouse on Thursday.
The delegation, from the African Union High-Level Ad Hoc Committee on South Sudan (C5), was established to support the implementation of peace in the country.
It is led by South African Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, Ronald Lamola.
President Kiir told the delegation that the country will hold elections in December this year as scheduled.
According to the office of the president, the delegation visited Juba to assess the progress and status of the Revitalised Peace Agreement.
Minister Lamola called for calm and solidarity to create the necessary conditions for holding elections.
South Sudan’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Monday Semaya Kumba, who also attended the statehouse meeting, reiterated that the government is determined to achieve peace, conduct elections, and maintain cordial cooperation with regional and international partners.
The C5 comprises members from Algeria, Chad, Nigeria, Rwanda, and South Africa.
The group has been tasked by the African Union to engage directly with peace stakeholders in South Sudan to build consensus and speed up the implementation of the peace agreement.
